Neighborhood Spotlight: Ashbury Heights

September 1, 2018

To the south of the Haight-Ashbury, at the base of Tank Hill, is a quiet residential neighborhood within walking distance of all the finest amenities. The older district is one of the last places in the city where you can still find classic brick single-family homes that haven’t yet been converted to multi-tenancy units. The upscale neighborhood has plenty of charm. Once favored by the dot-com professional crowd, it’s increasingly common to see couples and families in the area.

Read on to see why the neighborhood in Ashbury Heights might be just the spot for you to call home in San Francisco.

Buena Vista Park

Buena Vista Park has a long geological history. The rock hill goes all the way back to the Mesozoic, and the steep summit has been offering unparalleled views of the surrounding area nearly as long. The layout of the park leverages that summit to its advantage. A winding path connects various lookouts, including a local favorite in “the Window”, and surmounts to a manicured lawn at the peak. The various overlooks offer sweeping views of Golden Gate Park, the Pacific Ocean, and, on especially clear days, Drake’s Bay. While you’re there, don’t forget to take full advantage of the tennis courts.

Randall Museum and Corona Heights Park

Owned and operated by the San Francisco Recreation and Parks Department, Randall Museum got its start as the Junior Museum in 1937. It’s current location now offers a theater, arts and crafts shops, art studios, a variety of animal habitats, and an overlook of the bay ordained by sprawling gardens.

The Randall Museum also hosts lectures, exhibits, movies, stage plays, and classes, but its primary focus is on children’s education and field trips. The third Saturday of every odd month is Junior Engineer Day, where children race “H0 scale” trains around a track built and maintained by the Golden Gate Model Railroad Club since 1961.

Corona Heights Park, on Flint Street, ascends part of the same hill as Buena Vista, with more of that same terra cotta rock and a windy peak. It’s a perfect dog park, and it has a convenient playground.

Ashbury Market

This market is everything you want in a local corner store, and a perfect example of the local flair of the neighborhood. It has all the usual suspects, and the staff is incredibly sweet. Reviews rave about how the owner and staff are rays of sunshine, and always ready to greet dogs with a treat. The Ashbury Market is open from 8am to 10pm on weekdays and 9am - 10pm on weekends, even on holidays.

Ashbury Market knows their audience. They are stocked with rows of health-conscious options, as well as plenty of indulgences and baked goods. Fresh flowers add a touch of distinction that sets the market apart from just about every other corner store in the area.

Quiet Pace

Ashbury Heights has a quiet, leisurely pace that’s hard to find in San Francisco. Offering a brief respite from the urban bustle, Ashbury Heights is known for its smaller streets and residential feel. The neighborhood is an enclave from the noisier parts of the city that caters to a more low-key crowd. This and the strong sense of community are part of what’s made the area so inviting to families in recent years.

Easy Access to Shopping and Nightlife

The quiet, serene pace is ideal, most of the time, but sometimes you might want a little more bustle. Ashbury Heights is situated nearby to access to plenty of shopping, nightlife, and urban experience. It’s a quick ten minute walk to the quirky pubs, clubs, cafes, and shops of the Haight-Ashbury, and even closer to the Sunset Tunnel East Portal to the Muni Metro N Judah line at Duboce and Noe station.

Amazing Views

It’s called Ashbury Heights for a reason. Between the stunning views of Buena Vista Park, Tank Hill, and Corona Heights Park, Ashbury Heights has some of the best overlooks and summits in the city. It’s a great place to explore, walk the dog, or unwind after a stressful day at the office.
